W12: Dear Malaysians…

Yeo Ya Qi (1901604)

Are you a proud Malaysian?

Dear fellow countrymen,

Can you imagine how far we have been all this long?

Today our country Malaysia is celebrating the 65th anniversary of its independence on Wednesday, Aug 31, IT'S BEEN THAT FAR!

Decades ago, our ancestors from all 4 corners travelled all the way here and brought us together.

We are given a new identity as Malaysian ever since then.

Anyway, that's not the main point.

The real problem is that you are still so unappreciative and ignorant after all these years.

Have you been overseas?

If you have been overseas for an extended period, you will definitely miss the local food.

I am dedicating this to my fellow friends who always ask me what to eat every time we go out for a meal.

Malaysians are officially categorized into four major groups, namely Malay, Chinese, Indian and Indigenous Orang Asli, with a plethora of subcultural ethnicities among each. And everyone brings their own unique flavours that make up Malaysian cuisine; inherited, adapted and evolved from many traditions.

There are already so many options out there, yet Malaysian are still so uncertain about what to eat for the day is such a big letdown.

You never really show support for local goods

A simple question: Would you choose local cars over imported cars if no tax is being charged?

Surprisingly, for most people (at least the people around me), imported cars are always their first choice.

Is it because the imported cars didn’t have any problems? Imported cars more high tech? Imported cars look good? Imported cars make you look rich?

You never appreciate the athletes that went to the international stage on behalf of the people.

Whenever they underperformed, all the blood sweat and tears they went through were just torn down by the critics in the online community.

Who are you to criticize the warriors who fought to make Malaysia's name famous on the international stage?

You are supposed to show unconditional support and be appreciative, not disregard their contribution to the country.

If you have been to Japan, you will hardly see any improper rubbish disposal.

Unlike in Malaysia, everywhere you will see rubbish scattered on the floor with stray dogs and cats wandering around your neighbourhood.

You never take initiative to clean up your surrounding and beautify your garden.

How would anyone want to travel to a place with such an eye sore?

If you as the owner do not even appreciate the natural beauty of your home ground, how would other people?

If you have been to Denmark, you will see how a country is run by a clean government.

As a country that ranks consistently high in terms of international financial transparency, carefree life is what you can expect from the people there.

The efforts are always in proportion to the earnings. As long as you work, you will achieve something in the end because everything is fair and square.

There will be no prime minister who gets 12 years in jail because he is convicted in a multi-million dollar corruption trial.

This all happens when one is unappreciative and unsatisfied with what the country has given to him/her, and they desire more.

They take whatever belongs and does not belong to them, creating an uneven distribution of wealth and resources in our country.

Are these situations supposed to happen in our country?

Did our ancestors work so hard for today's scene?

Wake up Malaysian!

How many years more can our country sustain if we are not changing our mindset?

Proud and still hopeful Malaysian,

Ya Qi
